Grandmother’s Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients:
- 1 head of cabbage
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 large onion, minced
- 1 can (15 oz) stewed or diced tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 3/4 cup rice, cooked
- Seasonings for ground beef (salt, pepper, garlic powder, etc.)
- Additional seasonings for tomato sauce (oregano, basil, thyme, etc.)
- Olive oil (for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Core the head of cabbage and place it in a large pot of boiling water. Move the cabbage around, and as the leaves start to peel off one by one, remove them with tongs. Lay the cabbage leaves out to cool.
- In a mixing bowl, prepare the ground beef mixture. Combine ground beef, minced onion, cooked rice, and seasonings of your choice. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
- In another bowl, mix the stewed or diced tomatoes with the tomato sauce. Season the mixture according to your taste preferences.
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil.
- Spoon some of the tomato mixture into the bottom of the baking dish.
- Take a cabbage leaf and place a portion of the ground beef mixture in the center. Roll the leaf and tuck in the ends to create a secure cabbage roll. Place the roll in the baking dish, seam side down. Repeat with the remaining leaves and ground beef mixture, arranging the rolls tightly side by side in the dish.
- Pour the remaining tomato mixture over the top of the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are well covered.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the internal temperature of the rolls reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
